I didn’t really know too much about this historic city until I read Elizabeth Kostova’s “The Historian” (highly recommend that book, by the way). Istanbul is a place frequented by the characters and a place I found myself researching after completing the novel. I’ve heard so many fabulous stories about this city from Chloe and other traveling friends and want to check it out for myself.
Ahh, Paris. While Paris may seem a bit overrated, it’s been somewhere I’ve wanted to go since my french-speaking days in high school. I almost took a trip with my french teacher my senior year, but wasn’t able to gather up the funds. Thankfully, I have two friends living near the city so visiting them also gives me the excuse to visit the city of lights and couch surfing makes traveling so much more affordable!
Prague is another city frequently mentions in “The Historian” and filled to the brim with gorgeous architecture and history. The city of a hundred spires offers a breathtaking view and many, many gardens.
The hills are alive with the sound of music! Besides being the filming site of “The Sound of Music,” it’s also Mozart’s ol’ stomping grounds. Salzburg is filled to the brim with art and culture. It would also be great to add the Old City off but my UNESCO list and see the fortress in real life!
Budapest is a bit off the radar for tourism, but it is starting to grow. I have to be honest and say I don’t know too much about this Hungarian city, but I’m interested in learning more of it’s history and culture. So many of my travel friends are recommending it and it just looks stunning in their photographs!
Other options I’m Considering: Zurich & Bern, Switzerland, Warsaw, Poland, Luxembourg City (again), Luxembourg
Ok, so I tried to make the why to visit each of these different, but they all have a similar reason for my I want to visit them – the history. Being in Europe is like walking through a real life museum that somehow captures the past and allows itself to continue to grow and flourish, building new history and culture along the way.
Where are you planning to travel to this year?
